Civil Air Patrol Joins Search for Missing Teens

North Shore, Hawaii (Jan. 19, 2025) — Civil Air Patrol’s Hawaii Wing received a call at 4:05 p.m. Saturday from the U.S. Air Force’s Pacific Air Command to support U.S. Coast Guard District 14 in ongoing search and rescue efforts for two missing teenagers off the North Shore of Oahu.

In partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard, the Honolulu Fire Department, Honolulu Ocean Safety, and the Honolulu Police Department, Civil Air Patrol began conducting search operations Sunday with four of its Cessna aircraft from Kauai, Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island. Two of the CAP aircrafts carefully executed a coordinated flight pattern beginning at 9 a.m. that extended from Kawaihapai (Dillingham) Airfield to Kawela Bay along the North Shore. Two other CAP aircraft were scheduled to continue the effort Sunday afternoon.

The on-scene weather for the flights was scattered clouds with visibility up to six miles and surf at up to 15 feet.

Currently involved in the search are:

  • Aircrews from Civil Air Patrol’s Kauai Composite Squadron, Wheeler Composite Squadron, Maui Composite Squadron; and the Lyman Field Composite Squadron.
  • Crews from the Honolulu Fire Department’s Battalion 5 and Engine Company.
  • A boat crew from the Honolulu Fire Department Rescue Company.
  • Air 1 and Air 3 helicopter crews from the Honolulu Fire Department.
  • A drone team from the Honolulu Fire Department.
  • Jet ski crews from the Honolulu Ocean Safety Department.
  • The Honolulu Police Department.

Acting as a Total Force partner and the official U.S. Air Force civilian auxiliary, Civil Air Patrol helps the Air Force rapidly respond to nonmilitary threats domestically in a Defense Support of Civil Authorities capacity to save lives, relieve suffering, prevent property damage, and provide humanitarian assistance.
